Gabriola Music On Streaming Services

Well its been quite a while since I wrote a new post. Lately I’ve been discovering our very own Gabriola Musicians on streaming services. Musicians and Songwriters who have loaded their music up to various streaming services. Band Camp, Amazon Music, Tidal, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube etc. I’ve created a playlist on Spotify called Gabriola Songs to make it easy to get started finding Gabriola music.

Note: most streaming services require a monthly subscription fee. Some artists will only be on the free(for the artist) services like Band Camp, Sound Cloud and You Tube.

Gabriola Musicians Who Are Streaming

Here is a partial list of who I found so far: Corbin Keep, Tina Jones, Dave Teichroeb, Sarah Osborne, Brian Green, Mad For Joy, The Kerplunks, Gary Fjellgarrd, Atlantis One, Paul Gellman, Joshua Wood, Bob Bossin, Nerdicus, DJ Washed Up, NEAVV, Sly Jones, Steve Elder and coming soon Niz Wiz. Could be more and I’ll add then in as discovered.

This is a spotufy playlist. You may need a subscription to listen.
Above is a mixcloud link to the podcast of the radio show Road Poets . Dave Teichroeb is the host.

Allways Follow the Artist

Gabriola songs was created to promote and support the music of Gabriola Songwiters and Musicians. Our big plan was to hold something called Summer Fest. Well the pamdenic sure has put that on hold. It is important to know musicians really only make money when they play live. All the other stuff is essentially ways to promote and keep the fans and audience connected to their music and careers. Times have changed from when an artist sold CDs at record stores, online or at concerts. It’s very important to FOLLOW the artist. This is their connection to you. Each time they upload music you’ll be told about it. It also helps them gain credibilty and more inclusion in the streaming service’s official playlists. When a musican is added to an official playlist it’s almost the same as what getting played on the radio was in the “old days”. Help feed the algorithym.

Streaming Services Don’t Pay Musicians… Much

I also need to mention this about streaming. Most musicians get so little from the streaming services the music is essentially free. Below is a chart showing average payouts. From a high of .01 per stream on Amazon to .0001 per play on Youtube(free not Red). An example on Spotify is 1000 streams would make the artist $30. About enough for a burger and beer. Buy your favourite artist a beer when you see them too!

Find Another Way To Support Musicians

Always find another way to pay for your Gabriola music on streaming services. Band Camp allows Artists to sell their music directly to you. (Some Artists will only stream through Band Camp because they offer this.) Throw a big tip at the market when they play live. Pay to watch their online concerts. Buy a ticket to see their concert. Go to their website and buy a CD or other merchandise. Spotify allows artists to post a link for you to send money directly to the artist.

Listen

Most of all listen. Listen to the incredible art your fellow Gabriola Islanders have created. Join or find a streaming service and listen. Learn the songs and words. Find your favourite songs. Tell them. Follow the artist to help them and to know when new music is released. We will play live again. Nothing is greater than the thrill of seeing fans mouthing or singing along to the words of a song you wrote.

See you on the lawn this summer, Dave Teichroeb

She is honoured to bring her southern charm, wit and big hair to this special event. Honey looks forward to seeing all y’all out there in Zoomland!

Concert On The Screen is a must see and hear way for to celebrate our wonderful Island. Kelly Field is the bass playing foundation of many, perhaps most Gabriola bands and the inspiration for the show. Before the pandemic Kelly had planned a fundraiser where he would learn to play the music of his least favourite band, the Beatles. Kinda like Fabio getting his head shaved for charity. That got cancelled until one day, Dave Teichroeb, who also plays in a band with Kelly, uttered the words Concert On The Screen. A replacement fundraiser for the long running Concert On The Green was Born.

The Band

Who are these talented local musicians? The steller band of our Gabriola musical kin have been working hard tduring the pandemic to create a must see musical experience. Eight musicians. Four singing the leads and four playing the tunes.

Kelly Field is the bass playing foundation of many, perhaps most Gabriola bands and the inspiration for the show.
Andreas Kahre(drums) grew up in Ringo’s shadow, and tried to get away by chosing a life of wanton free jazz, contemporary gamelan and electronic music. But as he has since learned, there is no escaping the fab four.
Frank Sehr is Gabriola’s guitar virtuoso who performs weekly at the Surf. Kelly and Andreas join him in a band performing progressive and art rock.
Ian Cox plays keys and has studied music at Capilano University, written and arranged choral music, led original projects and played some of Canada’s biggest music festivals.
Fraser  Gabbott(vocals and guitar) has a vast repertoire of English bands, especially the Beatles. A talented harpist and guitarist as well, he will sing a few solo tunes at half time.
Jennefer Laidley (vocals)performs in the Gabriola Chamber Ensemble choir and at Gabriola open Mic’s. In the before time she was a member of Toronto’s Rock-N-Roll Newchoir.
David Botten(vocals) is singer, actor, musician, and graphic artist. A member of Twilight Radio Theatre and many local bands.
Chris Doherty(vocals) is a singer/guitarist for Gabriola band Deja’vu. His big charm and talent shines when it come to covering the Beatles.

Gabriola Video for the song Gabriola by Dave Teichroeb

Almost forgot to upload this. Me, Dave Teichroeb, the authour of this post, created a Gabriola video. Essentially a slide show of all things Salish Sea with some concert fottage and musician pics. Most of the Gabriola musicians who participated in the Gabriola Songs CD and concert are featured. The song, Gabriola, was the inspiration for the Gabriola Songs double CD. The backing band on this recording are The Kramdens from Guelph , Ontario. They can be seen in some live clips added from a theatre show I did with them. Live footage of a concert from Cultivate Music Festival includes the Gabriola Singers as my choir. That was a blast.

This Gabriola video was my first crack at video editing!

Enjoy,

Dave Teichroeb

Thanks for waiting. While you may have not known you were waiting, I have been diligently working on website pages dedicated to Gabriola Musicians. As I type this today I have just finished a list of 47 Gabriola Musician Pages. It is the start. More to come when I get the info. Please send me your info. You may ask why I’m doing this. Here is the long answer to that single word.

Why a Gabriola Musician Website?

I created a Gabriola Musician website out of the project Gabriola Songs. Gabriola Songs is 40 song CD of Gabriola Musicians singing from and about Gabriola Island. As the year went by I new I was collecting a treasure trove of info about our local musicians, composers, instrumentalists, song writers and even venues.

As I move forward I will attempt to catalogue and archive as much about Gabriola Music as I can. If you want to help, send me something you think I need to know.

Cheers,

Dave Teichroeb
